A field manual for the AI era

The Creative Operator

Two or three years from now, AI will do nearly anything at the drop of a hat. Nobody's coming to save you from that. But nobody's guarding the door, either. The same tools that changed my life are sitting right there. NOW is the time.

Field note Nº 000 · on becoming

Not a coder.
Not a prompter.
An operator.

op·er·a·tor (noun)
A creative who directs AI with taste and intent. Builds real things. Ships them. Keeps their integrity while the industry argues about whether the tools should exist.

Execution used to be the moat. It kept most people out of the room. Now execution is cheap, and everyone's panicking like that's bad news. It isn't. Taste was always the rare part. You've spent years building yours. You're not behind. You're early.

Nº 02 · the operator behind it

Not the exception.
The proof.

I'm Paul Von Rieter. Not a Valley guy. A wedding photographer and a dad with an EE and RF background who refused to sit still while everything changed. Six months of honest reps later: tEE ΔE Balanced, camera tech nothing else on the market touches. WERKS. CRUMB. GainSail. The Emulsion camera app. Multiple businesses running at seven figures, plus the websites and the internal tools behind all of it.

If that sounds out of reach, good. It did to me too. I'm not the exception, I'm the proof, and the same road is open to you. Walking people down roads is my other job: I've been taking photographers to the next level since 2016, hundreds of them. The real prize wasn't the revenue anyway. It was getting my time back: my family, my friends, my own life. That's the map I'm handing you.

Nº 03 · the doctrine

Read before
you panic.

Fifty field notes and counting. Short, unsentimental, written from inside the work. Here's the spine of it.

Field note Nº 008
AI will not replace your taste. It may expose the lack of it.
Field note Nº 002
Most creatives don't have an AI problem. They have a business model problem.
Field note Nº 006
The old moat was technical skill. The new moat is judgment.
Field note Nº 005
AI is not democratizing taste. It is democratizing execution.
Field note Nº 007
You can hate AI and still lose work to someone who uses it better.
Field note Nº 012
The future belongs to people who can direct tools, not just operate them.

Nº 04 · the path

From creative
to operator.

Every operator started out as somebody's "just a photographer" or "just a designer." Nobody hands you this road. You walk it, one honest rep at a time. Four legs. I've walked all four.

Step 01

See it straight

Cut through the panic and the hype at the same time. AI is not magic and it's not the end of you. It's a power tool with no opinion. The opinion is your job.

Step 02

Learn the tools

Claude Code. Agents. Skills. Automation that runs while you sleep. Not a hundred apps. A short stack you actually understand, wired the way working creatives work.

Step 03

Build with judgment

Scope a build so it ships. Architect systems that don't fall apart the second you look away. Spot the failure modes before they cost you the project. This is the part nobody teaches.

Step 04

Ship, then operate

The tool for your studio. The product for your clients. The business you've been carrying around in your head. Live, charging money, getting better every week. That's operating.

Nº 05 · the lab

Taste,
measured.

Anyone can talk about AI. Receipts are quieter. Every number below is a real thing you can go touch.

197 Camera profiles, individually measured on a CIEDE2000 rig. Not eyeballed.
85,735 BMW fault codes in one Mac-native diagnostic suite, built solo.
486 Tests passing in an enterprise AI platform serving a national mortgage lender.
112 Film grain presets modeled from seven real stocks, physics first.
6mo From learning the tools to multiple seven-figure launches.
15mb The whole CRUMB app. Native, notarized, no bloat.
8 Products shipped or in flight across photo, auto, astro, and fintech.

Nº 07 · the operator's first tool

Claude forgets.
CRUMB remembers.

Every lesson on this site got learned the hard way, across hundreds of AI sessions. CRUMB is where those lessons live now. I built it because my AI kept forgetting my decisions mid-project, and I watched it re-walk ground we'd already covered one too many times.

Day 40 starts knowing everything from days 1 through 39. If you take one tool from me, take this one.

Most first-timers don't fail at the code. They get stuck circling the vibe-coding feedback loop, prompting in place and calling it progress. You'll learn how to scope, build, and ship instead.

  • Scope a one-week build that actually ships

Nº 10 · fair questions

Asked, answered.

I'm not technical. Is this actually for me?
Yes. That's the whole point. I bring the systems background, you bring the taste. If you can direct a shoot or run a client project, you can direct these tools. The rest is teachable.
What tools will I learn?
A short stack, not a hundred apps. Claude Code and agents at the center, plus the skills and automations that keep working while you sleep. You'll understand every piece you use, which is why it holds up.
What does the mastermind cost?
Public pricing isn't set yet. The waitlist hears the number first and pays less than everyone after. Cohorts stay small on purpose, so the waitlist is also the line.
How is this different from another AI course?
You don't finish with a certificate. You finish with a shipped build and the judgment to do it again. Formulas age fast. Judgment compounds.
I'm busy. How much time does this take?
Live sessions, plus honest reps between them. Miss a session and the recording and materials are yours. But nobody gets carried here. Show up ready to build and I'll match you.
